Pathway Project - We Need Your Help
Work on the Pathway Project to create an accessible ‘welcome mat’ at the front of First-Plymouth Church begins this summer. The project was announced last fall and part of the money needed was raised during the annual pledge drive as some generous donors upped their contribution in support of the pathway. Approximately $70,000 was raised at that time towards the total estimated cost of $350,000, a number higher than initial estimates due to increased construction costs.
Currently, individuals who are unable to navigate the steps to the courtyard, and importantly into the columbarium, need to use the west entrance and the elevator to the main floor. When the church is locked, there is no safe way for these individuals to visit the courtyard and columbarium. In addition to providing an accessible path to the courtyard and columbarium, the project also includes the addition of new lighted steps to provide safer access to the church’s east entrance door from E Street and from our parking lot north of E Street.
“This project is an important statement to the community as a whole that First-Plymouth is welcoming to individuals of all abilities,” said Senior Minister Jim Keck.
“Donations to the Pathway Project will be used thoughtfully and with gratitude,” said Trustees Chairman, Bill Etmund. “All donations designated for this purpose will help us avoid using some of the church’s reserve funds that are needed for ongoing building maintenance, so this is the responsible way to achieve this goal, and a beautiful statement to the community.”
